What Is This?

I am getting really upset. Want to know why? OK, I'll tell you. I am a black woman and yes, I am getting tired of the race card. Each class that I am taking this semester is talking about race. I am like what the hell? Can we not focus on the same shit?

Now, this may come to a shock for some of you, but really. I do not blame race for people's, especially Black people's problems. A guy in my sociology class is Albanian. He raised his hand and said when he and his family immigrated to America they were on welfare, got off of welfare, opened their own business, and became successful. He said if he could do it, anyone else could. And you know what? I agreed. But didn't someone have to raise their ignorant hand and inform the gentleman that the only reason his family was able to succeed in this society is because they are White?

I immediately began to roll my eyes. Every time that line is used it makes minorities look bad. I do not deny racism. It exists. Now what? Am I supposed sit back and take what's "coming to me" as a Black Woman? Or do I strive for the best and overcome any obstacle? I am doing the latter. It takes hard work and dedication. Christ Sake, everyone can get an education. Everyone cannot get a stellar education, but you can take your behind to school and have it funded. You can also conduct yourself respectfully in public. You can speak properly, dress respectfully, and get a job. YES! YOU TOO CAN GET A JOB! It may not be a stellar job, but you can get a job.

I've been reading these books authored by experts on race. Frankly, they all sound robotic. Race this and race that. Ethnicity this and ethnicity that. Statistics show that this generation will blah, blah, blah. Studies have shown that immigrant and native born x,y, and z. I want to stand up in some of my classes and scream "race and ethnicity alone won't get you shit accept an acceptance letter into a particular group!" What does it matter anyway? I've never known people who worked hard and didn't see the fruits of their labor. I've known many people who did nothing and got nothing in return. You get what you put in.

So when the girl raised her ignorant hand and claimed the only reason his parents were successful is because they were White, it pissed me off. Never mind the fact that his parents made it off of welfare. Never mind that they were immigrants. Never mind that they initially lived in a bad neighborhood. Never mind the fact that they worked their behinds off to open a business and struggle to make a better life for them and their children. OH NO! They were White and that's why they made it. This thinking is similar to Blacks who manage to do nothing with themselves. Only their reasoning is: I can't become successful because I am Black. They claim they can't get a job because they're Black. They won't get an education because it's not for them.

I'll tell you this. Before you use race to justify any argument, look at the person's or groups entire actions. If you can't get a job ask yourself. Were you qualified? Did you dress appropriately? Did they do a background check and find dirt? Did you speak properly? Did you show they interviewer that you were here for them and not the other way around? Did you maintain eye contact? Did you ask questions? And there are 1,000 other things you can ask yourself before declaring you didn't accomplish something because you are BLACK!

So please let's stop using this crazy explanation for everything.

Thank You

Slavery is over but the minds of black people (not all, but some)are still enslaved and they don't want to be FREE.

OMG, I completely agree. Blacks have been victims of themselves for generations. They can't blame "the man" for everything that goes wrong in their lives.

Dear Author

I read your tirade and I have mixed feelings about it. I do have a degree in sociology. I mainly focus on sellout black women. I can't help but think black people are desperately trying to distinguish themselves for other black people that are struggling or doing criminality.

I do not excuse bad behavior but at the same time I will not let people judge me by the criminality of others. I do not think black people blame white people for their problems.

But after I saw what happened in Katrina and with this foreclosure crisis that has affected a majority of black women. I would be hard pressed not to believe that this was done intentionally.

I accept their are lazy black people and trust me I know quite a few of them. But at the same time I will not excuse other races or a race of my ow swindling the unfortunate and taking advantage of the less informed and uneducated black community.

Bashing other black people because they don't get "to your level of success" is really pathetic. Not everyone can be doctor, teacher, lawyer or whatever profession you deem a success.

That big mouth Bill Cosby who started this whole idea of bashing the black victim in the ghetto angers me. Considering he did Fat Albert cartoon with a mumbling black teenager on it. As a child seeing this made me say "what the hell is he saying".

Now he wants to turn around and get on his high horse. I personally think there is quite a few "Bill Cosby negros" on this board and it is a shame.

Sincerely

Mr Laurelton Queens
